Introduction

Overview ATNS is offering eighteen (18) bursaries for students to train towards a career in the aviation industry as Air Traffic Services Officers (ATSO)- What is an Air Traffic Services Officer? The ATSO is an important member of the air navigation team- As an ATSO, you will be assisting Air Traffic Controllers with their daily tasks- One of the main duties that you may have is answering phone calls and using the radio transceiver for air traffic related activities- There exist opportunities to grow and develop skills in the following careers within Air Traffic Management: Aerodrome Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO1) Approach Procedural and Radar Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO2/3) Area Procedural and Radar Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO3)

Job description

What does the bursary programme include?

The training bursary provides each bursar with an opportunity to conduct their studies at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA) based in Bonaero Park, Johannesburg.

The following is offered as part of the bursary programme:

  • - Transport to and from the ATNS ATA, as per study and practical requirements
  • - A monthly allowance
  • - 10 days of non-academic activities as determined by the study programme co-ordinators
  • - Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
  • - Accommodation, on a sharing basis, at a guest lodge arranged by the ATNS ATA

Selection Process

1-    Personality Assessment

- The personality assessment will show us the likelihood of you being able to do well in the specific role and is the first step in the process.

2-    Ability testing (various tests at different stages)

- Candidates identified for the ATSO bursary will need to take the following tests:

  • o  English reading and comprehension skills
  • o  Mathematical problem solving
  • o  Spatial reasoning
  • o  Diagramming (following instructions using diagram)
  • o  Detail perception

3-    Candidates meeting the required assessment criteria will be invited to a panel interview

4-    Upon successful completion of the panel interview, candidates will be required to undergo a mandatory medical assessment and verification.

5-    Upon successful completion of all the above, candidates may be offered a bursar contract.

Bursary Programme Outline

There are 3 main phases of the program:

  • - Core Content Course - a theory-based foundation course over a 21 week period
  • - ATS Validation - a practical module of On-the-Job-Training
  • - ATS Rating Course - a practical based course the supplements your theory training

The Core Content and ATS Rating courses are hosted at our ATA in Gauteng.

The monthly allowance will apply during these courses.

The ATS validation training will be either at OR Tambo International or the Cape Town International airport- 

  1.  - During this time, the bursar is placed on a fixed term contract
  2. - Medical aid and pension are not provided as benefits during this contract period.
  3. - No longer eligible for company accommodation, transport and so on.

Placement is subject to availability of vacancies and will be in line with ATNS’ Recruitment Policy- Applicants must be willing to relocate-

Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. - Be a minimum of 18-years-old for commencement of the Bursary
  2. - Be medically fit
  3. - Attach Grade 12 results.
  4. - Be willing to relocate anywhere in the country.
  5. - Be a South African citizen
  6. - Have Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and English (HG D or SG C or level 4 upwards)
